How to Submit your Job Application Successfully

You may think it’s simple. Find job. Click apply. Submit resume. However, there are details you could be leaving behind that show you are a quality candidate to an employer. Read on to learn how to submit your job application successfully.

  • Choosing a file format carefully: Your resume can easily change formatting and become a garbled mess when sent through programs and emails.
    • Send your resume in a Doc. format if submitting on a website form where an AI will see it before a human does. Otherwise, the software the company uses to screen applicants will not find your key words.
    • Send your resume in a PDF format when sending via an email to a real person. This means the hiring manager will not see the red underlines and grammar suggestions that a Doc. shows when downloaded.
  • Take it one step further checking your files: As mentioned, your files’ formatting are somewhat unpredictable once out of your hands.
    • Do a test email to yourself of your resume in different formats. You may notice that you’ve used incompatible or custom fonts that need to be changed before sending.
    • It’s best to check how your files send from one email platform to another. Try sending your files from your Gmail to your Outlook for example, to see if the formatting stays looking ok.
  • Follow the instructions listed in the job description: Sometimes a listing shows an apply button, but the description says to email the application to the hiring manager. This is your first test before you even reach the interview stage.
  • Ensure you are listing the job you’re applying for in your cover letter: Show that you have customized the letter and it is not just a re-used template.
  • If submitting via email: Make your email submission a professional letter style, not a blank message with an attachment. Mentioning the job you’re applying for, the company name, and that you are grateful for the opportunity to apply shows you are a passionate candidate.
