Interview Follow-Up

The interview doesn’t end after you walk out the door of an employer’s office. Interview follow-up is an essential step in securing a role as it shows an employer that you are interested and proactive. Follow the tips below to ensure you have a seamless transition from post interview to your potential career.

  • The Who and Where
    • Consider where you were corresponding with the hiring manager or employer, as well as any contact information you were given, whether that be an email or phone number.
    • For example, if all your communication was on LinkedIn with a hiring manager, then the interviewing employer gave you their card in person, send a follow-up thanking the hiring manger via LinkedIn then send the employer an email as well.
  • The What
    • A follow-up can look like many things, including a phone call, email, or a text message.
    • Make your message professional yet genuine, potentially bringing up a notable or personal moment from the interview, such as wishing the interviewer a good weekend on their fishing trip they told you about. Otherwise keep it simple and say you are grateful and look forward to hearing back from them soon.
  • The When
    • Always follow up within 24 hours to thank an interviewing team.
    • Additionally, if the employer did not give you a date they planned to get back to you, follow up within about a week after the interview. If they did tell you a date they’d contact you, and you have not heard back by then, follow up within two day after the date they gave you.
    • There is some wiggle room in the timing for a follow-up. Follow your gut and focus on showing a hiring team you are interested and motivated as a candidate.
