San Benito County Farm Bureau (SBCFB) is the preeminent agricultural association in San Benito County and is seeking a highly experienced individual who can successfully oversee all aspects of the organization as its Executive Director. The Executive Director’s responsibilities include serving the needs of members, working closely with the Board of Directors, fostering relationships with elected officials, agency officials and the public, and meeting the organization’s strategic objectives including problem solving for individual members.

Located in Hollister, California, SBCFB has effectively represented the farm community for more than 100 years as “The Voice of Local Farmers and Ranchers.” The selected candidate will be an individual who aligns with the culture of San Benito County Farm Bureau and can provide effective leadership.

 

Basic Function:

San Benito County Farm Bureau Executive Director

The Executive Director is directly responsible to the County President. This position manages the day-to-day business activities of the organization and carries out the policies and directives of the San Benito County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. Maintenance of a culture of transparency and communication is paramount.

Managerial Responsibilities:

Manages the county Farm Bureau office. Organizes and directs office business procedures and routine work. Makes certain the members of the Board of Directors are informed of their responsibilities as detailed in the Bylaws. Provides the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors with pertinent information required for informed decision making.

Maintains and develops programs and serves as the source of information to meet the needs of members. Significant time is devoted to assisting individual members with problem solving regarding, among other issues, regulatory compliance, land use, and agency interface.

Maintains an active and cordial working relationship with local governments, agencies, agricultural organizations, other county Farm Bureaus, commodity groups, and non-farm organizations. Essential is relationship development with elected officials and their offices. Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with the Farm Bureau partners, serving as liaison between them and Farm Bureau members. Maintains a close and personal working relationship with the UC Cooperative Extension Service, the County Agricultural Commissioner and all the appropriate county government staff. Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with CFBF program directors and staff.

Responsible for using all forms of media publicity, especially social media. Assists in letters, phone calls and visits to elected officials by members of the Farm Bureau.

Coordinates development of membership acquisition and membership maintenance, including: factual information for the Membership Committee in establishing membership goals; recommendations for detailed plans of feasible membership acquisition and maintenance programs; maintenance of current and accurate membership records; developing membership policies; assisting Membership Committee in conducting membership drives and membership retention.

Provides support and necessary materials to ad hoc and standing committees; assists committee chairs and coordinates annual functions, such as, Annual Meeting, Scholarships, Golf Tournament, and Election Forums; keeps board members and officers alerted and informed on issues and problems with which they will be directly concerned; develops meeting agendas based on calendar of events and timely issues; researches and develops information on issues and problems; handles routine work such as meeting notices and publicity; attends public meetings and forums as an official representative of Farm Bureau.

Actively promotes the successful development of the Farm Bureau. Aids in developing understanding and participation among the membership; aids in servicing complaints and problems; encourages and facilitates county input into the CFBF and AFBF policy process; provides staff support for county representatives to CFBF House of Delegates and committees.

Responsible for producing a monthly newsletter and securing advertisements to help defray publishing costs. In addition to published communications, responsible for regular communications that keep members apprised of important issues.

Makes certain affiliated functions such as San Benito Ag in the Classroom, and Farm Day receive appropriate management and oversight.

Finances:

Develop and recommend sound fiscal policies to the board of directors. Supervises the preparation of a preliminary budget each fiscal year for consideration by the Treasurer, Finance Committee, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors. Works with Treasurer and Finance Committee to develop and implement sound financial practices. Oversees Farm Bureau’s fundraising activities and enterprises.

Property Management:

Sees that Farm Bureau held properties are maintained in good working order, preventative maintenance is performed, and tenants are accommodated.

Qualifications:

Is familiar with agriculture in the county and related special problems. Understands the basic principles and responsibilities involved in managing an office in a businesslike manner, to include developing and implementing sound personnel and fiscal practices. Has exceptional communication skills including ability to interact with the press and various civic groups.

Available during and outside normal business hours to carry out the responsibilities as described. Gets along well with others, able to work under direction of elected volunteer leadership, and has a working knowledge of governmental functions and legislative affairs.
